Stomahesive ostomy skin barriers (wafers) are ideal for people whose stoma output is semi-formed to formed stool.  This skin barrier can stick to both dry and moist skin while protecting the skin.  Another feature of the Stomahesive® skin barrier is an outer protective coating which helps keep it in place.  This skin barrier should maintain adhesion to the skin when showering, bathing, and swimming.  Plus, Stomahesive® skin barriers are easy to fit, apply, and remove.  If the skin around your stoma is uneven from scars, crevices, or indentations, you can use ConvaTec's Stomahesive Paste 183910.  Also, to provide added protection to the peristomal skin from output, you can try their Eakin Cohesive Seals 839002.

How To Use SUR-FIT Natura® Skin Barriers/Wafers

  1. Measure your stoma using the measuring guide provided. Select a skin barrier with a flange (white ring) at least 1/2 inch larger than your stoma size. For flush or retracted stomas, convex skin barriers are recommended.
  2. Trace the exact same stoma size onto the center white release paper on the back of the skin barrier.
  3. Cut along the tracing with a curved scissor. *If using a pre-cut wafer, no cutting necessary. *ConvaTec skin barriers are available in Stomahesive® and Durahesive®, solid and flexible (white or tan collars) with or without convexity.
  4. A caulking material, such as Stomahesive® Paste or an Eakin® Cohesive Seal, can be applied to the back of the skin barrier to further fill gaps between the wafer and the stoma. Allow the paste to set for one minute prior to application to the skin. (Do not spread the paste.)

Application of SUR-FIT Natura® Skin Barrier/Wafer

  1. Center the skin barrier over the stoma.
  2. Press the skin barrier against the skin. If using a tape bordered skin barrier, remove the remaining backing paper one side at a time.
  3. During application, maintain gentle pressure on the skin barrier for 30 seconds to improve adhesion.

Removal of ConvaTec SUR-FIT Natura Skin Barrier/Wafer

  1. While supporting the skin with one hand, use your other hand to gently pull the edge of skin barrier down (away from the skin).
  2. You can make removal easier by using an adhesive remover product made by ConvaTec, Coloplast, or Hollister.

FAQ

Q: What's the difference between this and the Durahesive skin barriers?
A: Stomahesive® and Durahesive® are two different ConvaTec adhesive formulas. Stomahesive® (this product) is designed for semi-formed to formed stoma output and adheres to both dry and moist skin. Durahesive® is designed for mostly liquid output and swells slightly ("turtlenecks") to reinforce the seal. Choose based on your typical output consistency, not personal preference alone — ask your WOC nurse if you're unsure.

Q: What size stoma does this barrier fit?
A: It's cut-to-fit up to 1-1/4", with a 1-3/4" (45mm) flange. Trace your stoma size onto the backing paper and cut with curved scissors before applying — general guidance is to leave about 1/8" of clearance around the stoma.

Q: Does this have a tape collar?
A: Yes, this version has a tan tape collar for added adhesion at the barrier's edge. If you'd prefer no tape collar, ConvaTec also makes a Durahesive version without one.

Q: What is the HCPCS code for insurance billing?
A: A4414.

Q: How many barriers come in a box?
A: 10 per box.

Q: Can I use this in the shower or while swimming?
A: Yes — Stomahesive® skin barriers are designed to maintain adhesion during showering, bathing, and swimming.

Q: What if the skin around my stoma is uneven or has scars?
A: ConvaTec's Stomahesive® Paste (183910) can fill in gaps, creases, or indentations for a more even barrier surface. For extra protection against output, Eakin® Cohesive Seals (839002) work well too.

Q: How do I remove the barrier without irritating my skin?
A: Support the skin with one hand while gently peeling the barrier edge down and away with the other. An adhesive remover wipe or liquid (ConvaTec, Coloplast, or Hollister all make one) makes this easier and reduces skin trauma.

Q: Does Parthenon Company have the lowest price on this item?
A: We price-check daily against other authorized ConvaTec dealers. If you find it lower elsewhere, call 1-800-453-8898 and we'll do our best to match it.
