What Causes A Temporary Ostomy?

14th Sep 2015

This is a great question and one that we get asked often.  I was taking a look at an article in the Reno,NV ostomy group newsletter and saw a re-print of a great story by Nancy Brede, RN from the Pacesetter, St Paul, MN.  It's focus was on this topic exactly! Brede identifies four common situations that cause a temporary ostomy.

  1. Colon Cancer
  2. Hirschsprung's Disease
  3. Diverticulits
  4. Inflammatory Bowel Disease or Crohn's Disease

The idea of a temporary ostomy is to surgically create the diversion with a plan to rep-connect in the future.  The system is left intact so that is option is available when the patient is examined for the re-connection.
