FAQ Section
What is Xeroform gauze used for?
It's commonly used on donor sites, lacerations, burns, abrasions, and skin graft sites — anywhere a non-adherent primary dressing is needed to protect healing tissue.
Why does Xeroform gauze not stick to the wound?
The petrolatum and bismuth tribromophenate coating keeps the mesh from adhering to the wound bed, which reduces pain and disruption to new tissue when the dressing is changed.
Is Xeroform gauze the same as plain petrolatum gauze?
Not exactly — Xeroform contains 3% bismuth tribromophenate, which has mild antimicrobial properties in addition to the non-adherent petrolatum base.
Can I use this on a heavily draining wound?
It's best suited for low-exudating wounds. For heavily draining wounds, a more absorbent primary or secondary dressing is typically recommended — check with your wound care provider.
Does this need a secondary dressing on top?
Yes. Xeroform is a primary contact layer and is typically covered with a secondary dressing (gauze, foam, or similar) to secure it and manage any additional drainage.
What sizes does this come in?
This page is the 4" x 4" size. It's also available in 2" x 2" and 5" x 9".
Is this sterile?
Check current packaging/listing for sterility status, as this can vary by lot — your ostomy/wound care specialist team can confirm before your order ships.
